Alphabetical Inspiration for Your Little One

Saturday

Letter A: Conclusion

What an Awesome A week!

Today we returned our A books to the library and got a stack of B books for next week. There are so many possibilities and activities to do, I think it's important to keep it light, fun and relevant to your individual child. I'll list some more A words below that may spark an idea for you to run with.

A words for preschoolers: acorn, apron, ax, ambulance, animal, apple, astronaut, acrobat, aquarium, ant, ape, arrows, alligator, anteater, albino, air, armadillo, airplane, away, add, automobile, American, awesome!

Letter A Sign Language

You'll naturally do this A sign when you do your rhyme:

Way up high in the apple tree
Two little apples smiled at me
I shook that tree as hard as I could
Down came the apples
Mmmmm - they were good!

Letter A Outing: Art Gallery

Letter A: Airplane Wings Activity

Cool art project found in the book Art Across the Alphabet!

Have the little one decorate some wings cut out from old cardboard or tag board. I first measured Ayden's arms and drew some approx. shapes on the cardboard and let him go to town with his Stokmar block crayons - then I cut them out, punch two holes on each and tied string threw to attach to his arms.

Then he flew around the house like a little jet airplane.

I think we'll keep these homemade wings handy for watching
Jay Jay the Jet Plane.

Letter A Outing: Aquarium

We took some time today in our errands to visit the pet store to see some Animals that live in Aquariums.

Aqua Animals ~ Fish

This is a great field trip ~ aka ~ Letter Outing ~ for your child to connect with the letter A. Aquariums allow children to peer into another world which sparks their imagination.

Letter A: Art on Paper

It's a great idea to create an art wall for your weekly art projects.
At the end of the week, the smaller pages can be stored in a binder for your little one to reflect on threw out the "alphabet season".

Here's a start of our Letter A Art Wall:

Check the links in the right hand column for great printables. So far we've created "Ayden's Awesome Action Hero Apple Man" and he's colored or watercolored an Ape, an Ant, an ATV and an Apple with a sign language hand.

Tomorrow we are going to create wearable airplane wings out of an old cardboard box.

Letter A: Introduction

Today was our first official day of our alphabet agenda.

It's interesting to see how a three year old grasps the idea of a routine.
My little guy definitely grasps the idea of the "letter of the week" (thanks to sesame street) so today I just introduced the big A and little a.

We drew on the easel: alligator, apple, airplane, ant and I wrote the names beside each picture and underlined the letter a's. Then we had an apple and peanut-butter for a snack.

Other "a" foods: avocado, apricots, anise, almonds

An animal was also introduced into our home this week - We got a dog! I was kinda hoping to wait until the letter D week...

When we went to Wally World to spend the money intended for an oil change on our new animal friend, we pointed out all the a's we found in the store and then on our van when we were done shopping.

Allnaturalme.com ~ we found 3 a's ~ one big A and two little a's.

That's what you have to do. Incorporate your lifestyle and the things around you. Things will just pop up for the letter you are working with.

Today we found a picture that Ayden, who's name also starts with 'a', drew last week and it was a chalk on construction paper drawing that we glued this place packaging piece to it so with it being a very interesting piece, I complimented it and said, "That is so cool Ayden. It is very abstract. Abstract begins with the letter A." And he looked very proud and said Thank you!

Just you see Mama, you'll be A obsessed this week!

Books we rented from the library:
Ants, Anna and the Letter A,
Alligators All Around (an alphabet book with alligators acting out each letter),
Alligators,
Apples for Sale,
The Art Lesson,
My "a" Sound Box
and another Ant book.

Mama Teach Me

Our first steps in preschool education is exploring the alphabet.

Unstructured yet planned, we'll learn a new letter each week and focus on daily activites to reinforce our new addition to the alphabet.

ABC Freestyle will go with the flow and include fun activities such as: alphabetically inspired art, crafts, workbooks, coloring pages, songs, games, sign language, internet treasure hunts, food, sound and word associations and also a weekly field trip known as a "Letter Outing".

Please comment on the posts and share your great alphabet ideas.
